Kharkiv Aviation Institute.was founded in 1930. Its history is closely connected with the development of aircraft engineering and science. The University is famous for its creation of the first in Europe high-speed airplane with retractable landing gear and the creation of the design of the turbojet engine developed by a teacher of KhAI A. M. Like who afterward became the academician and designer of many structures of aircraft engines including the engine of the aircraft Su-27.

Ukraine is one of few countries in the world where aviation and space engineering are developed and manufactured and where skilled specialists are trained in these areas. The National Aerospace University Kharkiv Aviation Institute is the leading one among the Ukrainian educational institutions which turn out such specialists.
Khai is a unique higher education institution where the airplanes developed by the Institute Design Bureau under the supervision of professor I. G. Neman were produced serially at the aircraft plants and run on passenger airlines.
In 1978 the KhAI was given the name of N. Ye. Zhukovskiy. In 1980 the Institute was awarded the order of Lenin. In 1998 the N. Ye. Zhukovskiy State Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” was founded based on the KhAI and in 2000 the University got a status of the National higher educational institution and got the name of the National Aerospace University Kharkiv Aviation Institute.
NATIONAL AEROSPACE UNIVERSITY
During the period of its existence, the University has trained about 60 the engineers. More than 80% of the specialists with higher education who work in the Ukrainian aerospace area are the graduates of KhAI.
From 1977 to 1984 the Designer General O.K. Antonov run the department of airplane structure at KhAI.
The distinctive special peculiarity of KhAI is its close relations with the industry. At present, the Designers General and heads of the largest aerospace enterprises: Ya.E. Isenberg, P.V. Balabuyev, V.A. Bogyslayev, I.V. Drenovskiy, S.M. Konyutov, F.M. Muravchenko, A.K. Mialitsa are employed at the University.

At present over 10000 thousand students and 200 post-graduate students are trained at the University; 700 teachers and 3 thousand employers work here. Among them, there are 150 Professors and Candidates of Science. Among the teachers of the University, there are also: 1 USSR State Lenin Prize winner, 7 USSR State Prize winners, 28 Ukraine State Prize winners, 11 USSR Council of Ministers Prize winners.
Khai is a member of the International Association of University; Global Association, Organization of Industry and Airport Technology; it is also in the International Catalogue, as well as to the Aerospace Agency of Ukraine.
KhAI is a co-executor of some programs which are carried out with universities and companies of the USA, Japan, Germany, France, Mexico, and Chine. The University takes part in the program of creation of the “Alfa” international space station.
In 1992 KhAI resumed the training of foreign students over 300 foreign citizens from 25 countries of Asia, Africa and America are trained annually at the University.
KhAI covers a separate territory of the city in the forest-part zone, its area amounts to about 25 hectares. The University has 8 academic buildings, a research institute, and laboratories, the library with 1 million volume in a stock, a campus, a sporty complex, a swimming pool, clinic of first medical aid, dining halls, a bank, children garden, etc.

Kharkiv Aviation Institute Accommodation
The University has its campus situated around the academic buildings. It consists of 10 halls of residence with 6110 places available.
The halls of residence house reading halls, dining halls, canteens, cafes.
Students can live in a two or three-bed dormitory on-campus with the following facilities:
- 2-3 beds,
- bedside-tables;
- a wardrobe;
- a table;
- bookshelves;
- chairs in the room;
- bathroom facilities;
- fitted kitchen with a cooker.
Students can cook their meals on their own.
The accommodation in the halls of residence is not included in the tuition fee and shall be paid separately. The cost of living in the hostels in a two-bed dormitory varies from 40 USD to 70 USD per month subject to living conditions. The cost of living in the hostels in a three-bed dormitory varies from 30 USD to 50 USD per month subject to living conditions. The price depends on the heating season.
International students may rent private lodging. The cost of private rented accommodation varies according to a city district, lifestyle, furniture, etc. and amount to 250-300 USD per month.
KhAI students have a great possibility to practice various kinds of sport. Khai has a sports complex which houses a track and field hall, swimming pool, and stadium.
The University has a “PROLISOK” sporting health camp which is located on the bank of the river. It is a wonderful place to spend summer holidays and practice sport.

LANGUAGE PROGRAMS AT THE PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS
Language Programs are taught at the Preparatory Department for foreign citizens at the National Aerospace University “KhAI”. During the period of existence of the Preparatory Department about 1000 foreign citizens from all over the world obtained the knowledge necessary for their further study at the NAU KhAI and other higher educational institutions of Ukraine on engineering, economics, and natural sciences.
The training is conducted according to the standard curricula approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The students of the Preparatory Department study the following disciplines: Russian language, Ukrainian language, English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Drawing, Computer science, Computer linguistics, Biology (for those who wish to study in the future on natural sciences).
The cost of training amounts to 1200 $ USD per year.
The academic year at the Preparatory Department lasts from September 1 to July 1 and it consists of two semesters. The foreign citizens have to arrive for training within the period from September 1 to January 1. The second semester starts in February. At the end of each semester, the students have to take the examinations followed by holidays. The students of the Preparatory Department may also be exempted from attending classes during their national and religious holidays.
The accommodation conditions for the students of the Preparatory Department are similar to those for foreign students who are trained at other academic faculties.
